FREE OFFER FOR ALL ANGLERS:-

For all new fishing guests (staying at TRM for minimum of two nights), TRM offers a complete introduction package to the Tongariro River.  This is a comprehensive “tiki tour” by Ross (so he can escape from the laundry!) escorting you from the upper winter limit at the Fence Pool down river to De Latours Pool.  This tour will demonstrate the variety of different pools and access available and save new Tongariro converts days of researching what, where, when, how, why, etc. Bookings essential.

Local Tourist Hype:

Now for some local tourist hype which we hope will be of interest: Turangi village claims (modestly) to be “The trout fishing capital of the world”.  Naturally we concur with this – that is why we live here.

Tongariro River Motel is situated on State Highway 1 (corner of Link Road) just south of the Tongariro River Bridge in the centre of the North Island approximately midway between Auckland and Wellington.  We are about half way to anywhere in the North Island.  This is an attractive location close to the Tongariro River – a world famous trout fishing river with pleasant walking tracks (from where you can easily spot the trout) along the banks.  This river-side walk is a compulsory recreation for all guests.

Turangi local shopping centre has one supermarket and four trout fishing tackle shops (see what we mean!) and various cafes and restaurants all located within 5 minutes level walk or 2 minutes drive from the motel.

The location is also close to the Tongariro National Park region which enjoys World Heritage Area status for its outstanding natural values.  Daily transport is available to and from the Tongariro Crossing – claimed by Lonely Planet to be the best one day walk in New Zealand – 19 km across an alpine volcanic lunar landscape.  This region featured in the film trilogy, Lord of the Rings, as Orc country, Mordor, under Mt. Doom.  The Whakapapa ski fields – the largest in New Zealand – are about 40 minutes drive time from Turangi.

TRM’s New Environmental Assessment?

All New Zealand motels with Qualmark ratings are now to be compulsory reassessed based on their environmental friendliness. (?) More PC buzz word madness to confuse everyone. Their proposal has understandably attracted some flak from certain motel operators. TRM question the need for this motel – with the main activity based on fly fishing – having to be part of any such grading nonsense. Their inspector will now have to check we are using curly long life light bulbs and we will get extra ratings for the number of smelly compost bins oozing worm farms…etc. This is getting crazy…
There are almost as many terms to describe environmental friendly types of travel experiences as there are motels. But any holiday at TRM which involves a fishing experience must automatically qualify; indeed, it will most likely exceed the conceptual basis parameters to achieve environmental friendliness as it incorporates eco tourism, conservation tourism, adventure tourism, endurance tourism, nature based tourism, responsible tourism, sustainable tourism, green tourism, multi-sport tourism, cultural tourism and even perhaps enjoyable wellness tourism, all available in one neat package at TRM.Any pursuit of wild Tongariro trout would qualify, as follows:

Eco Tourism – i.e. conserving the natural environment for future generations by joining the Advocates for the Tongariro River (see Links) – most TRM inmates have already joined.

Conservation Tourism – minimising impacts by leaving the natural environment as you found it – The Tongariro River flows from the Tongariro National Park – a World Heritage Area.

Adventure Tourism – i.e. any unusual experience incorporating risk and uncertainty such as wading through the mighty Tongariro River pools.

Endurance Tourism – i.e. improving physical fitness by completing the bridge to bridge marathon on the Tongariro River – in waders..

Nature Tourism – i.e. tourism focused on nature such as fishing in drop dead beautiful wilderness unspoiled native bush clad wild rivers.

Responsible Tourism – i.e. minimizing any negative impacts confirmed by TRM’s “Check, clean dry” policy to prevent Didymo spreading.

Sustainable Tourism – i.e. does not reduce the availability of resources by adherence to DoC’s management system which licences anglers to ensure the sustainability of a wild fishery.

Green Tourism – i.e. any activity operating in an environmentally friendly fashion, like tramping the river circuit, fly fishing, or rafting.

Multi-sport Tourism – i,e, focused on several physical outdoor activities from the same base such as fly fishing, rafting, tramping, mountain biking, canoeing, etc.

Cultural Tourism – i.e interacting with other cultures – an easy one at Turangi where indigenous Maori predominate – having your motel unit serviced qualifies as a cultural experience.

Enjoyable Wellness Tourism

- i.e Warning – fly fishing is
addictive but well rewarded in the thrill of the strike as a wild
steelhead rainbow trout leaps for freedom – very memorable and
enjoyable… but of course we just made that up.

So prospective TRM guests are warned – to fit the new PC criteria, to qualify as an environmentally friendly motel, fly fishing may become compulsory…

TRM Library News – updated June 2009

(TRM have a comprehensive Fishing Widows’ exchange library.  TRM’s caring General Manager, Pip, is acutely aware anglers often desert their partners for long periods to go fishing.  So She makes sure there are over 100 novels plus other interesting gardening and cooking and tourist books etc.  In addition She subscribes to North & South and Woman’s Weakly and several other fishy magazines of course. In addition TRM also have a Fishos’ Reference Library which is where Her laundry assistant Ross is in trouble with She Who Must Be Obeyed…  In the list below the General Manager, SWMBO is concerned about the increasing number of books which are euphemistically described as “OUT ON LOAN” and are accidentally overdue ?  But this is supposed to be TRM’s “Reference” Library for anglers, not to be confused with the Fishing Widows’ lending exchange library.  Even some of our fishy dvd’s [i.e. "A River Somewhere" by Rob Sitch & Tom Gleisner, "Destination Trout" by Fraser & Clancey] appear to have been “borrowed”.  So if amongst your fishing gear you find any with the TRM stamp on them we wonder if you would be so kind…. just drop them in on your next trip. )
