Tongariro River Trail

Fishing Report (?)

Paul Dyson at Judges Pool I should know better but some people never learn…

The moment I praised the fishing after the weekend and was about to abandon the motel laundry duties to take Boof walkies ( I might have taken a rod too – just in case) the river-Gods struck.  After reporting the rain dancing Wizard last week risking response from evil forces of Satan, on Monday they struck back with a series of local earthquakes at 7.30am, 8.20am, 8.30am, etc.  Boof became spooked and needed a long walk to recover.  Just as well SWMBO was away – again – on Christmas (?) shopping leave.

I will let a guest explain it.  Izaak from Unit 1 was in the Braids and had hooked up and landed two by 7.30 am.  Then it suddenly went dead.  He checked with other fishos in the Braids.  Same effects.  He checked with the trolls below the road bridge.  Ditto.  Between 8 anglers they caught …. nil.

So we know when we are beaten.

Yesterday we did not even take our rod on our walk.  So today we report on walking tracks instead…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Hi Ross

Do you know  if there are any advances in this project or if it is abandoned. I ask this question because the website seems to stay unchanged for months ? Do you think new parts of the trail will open in spring or next summer ?

Thank you for replying because it is time for us to make planning for holidays

TH

Other anglers and hikers and bikers have also made similar enquiries.  TRM replied as follows:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Hi TH,

It is encouraging that so many hikers and bikers are out there in cyberspace watching for any progress – very positive signs for the TRT (Tongariro River Trail)

The TRT project has been taken over completely by the Advocates now with Richard Balm appointed as the project manager.  Richard is also Project Manager for the 18 Government cycleways projects so the TRT is in competent hands and will happen.  The Advocates last committee meeting was only last Saturday (20 August) .  So I forwarded your enquiry on to them – see cc’s above.

wayne-boustridge-and-rainbow-jack I regret I am no longer involved.  The website information will be altered asap to reflect this.

The last update on the website was 22nd June when under the “Project Diary” heading I copied the submission to the Taupo Council which was part of the application for funding.  Those funds have now been granted so now the TRT is all go, despite the lack of any promotion recently.

The first stage next summer will be extending existing Tongariro River tracks up to Red Hut Bridge to provide a one day hiking/biking circuit from Turangi.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Thank you for your interest….

For those fishos wondering what this is all about… have a squiz at the Project Diary entry – go to Tongariro Alpine Crossing and drag to TONGARIRO RIVER TRAIL  or google  http://tongarirorivertrail.co.nz  for more info.  For anglers, these tracks will open up the upper Tongariro above the winter limit, previously only accessible by raft.  A lot will be happening there over the next few years to the mutual advantage of anglers, hikers, bikers, Turangi, etc.

But as this might be asking too much we have copied the seed funding application for you tomorrow.  This provides a brief summary of the TRT and indicates the importance of this trail for Turangi and the Tongariro.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Other correspondence from across the ditch:

Hi Ross
Good to see the fish have decided to start running. However the silence re the match at the weekend has been deafening .  How about a bit of un biased praise for the benefit of  all the guys from over the ditch who patronise your fine establishment and have coped nothing but  Shite about how good the all blacks are over the last few months .  But hang on they are just resting before the world cup.
All the best
Ian & Peter

So I added the images above to remind other West Islanders why we live here…
