Challenging conditions?

TRM Fishing Report (?)

typical-brown-trout-from-bridge-pool-27-july-2010 There are a few very suspicious fishos who imagine that the Tongariro River fishing must be difficult – we call it “challenging” – when another TRM Fishing Report picks on salmon or goes off on another TRT (Tongariro River Trail) tangent…?

Truth is that whilst some visitors found it relatively hard going over the last week or so, some others did well.  We repeat the river is low and clear with summer type conditions in every way, except for the temperature.

One local fisho landed 14 in these conditions on Saturday.

A TRM regular inmate, MC, also managed his usual daily catch limit but admitted it was hard going.  He moved around a lot between the Bridge Pool down to Bain Pool and caught trout at almost every spot using several versions of small flash back nymphs.

We know there are plenty of trout there – a glance off the road bridge confirms that.  But it is those who can adapt to the summer type conditions that appear to be more successful.

dark-overcast-conditions-27-july-2010 So to convince viewers this morning I took Boof walkies up to the main road bridge to check it out. Note – photo on right – in gloomy damp conditions there was no one at all fishing the prime spots next to the bridge at 10 am.  I was almost too late.  They had all caught their bag limits and gone home.

Fortunately I just caught this sneaky local trying to hide the evidence (image above right) in his car.  He was quite reluctant to provide his name or allow a photo as he, like many other locals, does not want the world to know how good it really is at Turangi.  Or he might have been having a sickie?  So keep it to yourself – OK?  You will note he didn’t even need waders.  After landing the one in the photo above he released another brown as it was slightly smaller than this keeper.

Correspondence – Corrections…

Further to the Salmon Fishing Report yesterday (see report below) Mike Pratt sent us some corrections… as follows:

mike-pratt-on-tongariro Hi Ross and Pip;
Having a look at the TRM reports the other day and there was my mug on the site.
I have to agree with the Aussie comment with regard to the beautiful ‘Rainbow Trout’ that fellow was holding.  With regard to the photos of yours truly the first and 4th photos were wild winter steelhead (searun rainbow) from a secret north island stream, WG knows where, the 2nd photo was,in fact, a beautiful Coho salmon from the Chekamus River up one of the mainland inlets and the 3rd photo is still my personal best steelhead to date which, after measuring girth and length before release came out to just under 22 pounds from the world famous Thompson River known for big summer steelhead.  Enjoying the daily reports and am looking forward to getting over to NZ in a couple of months…….  Judging from the great photos the four of you had a great time while in the British Isles.  I loved the photos of those pastoral English trout streams, in a sense the birthplace of all the things we have come to embrace around this planet with regard to our passion for this sport.  Once I get down we’ll have a chance to get a catch up on the trip……  We’ll see to you all in the very near future.
All the best;

Mike

(Thanks Mike.  We didn’t know there were any “secret” North Island streams left…)
