Fishing Report

Another beautiful day on the Tongariro River.  We found the above group of suspicious looking anglers at the Breakfast Pool.  This is the Barrett family from Turangi showing their guests from Wellington the local version of Oriental Parade.  Not as crowded though.

There were the most anglers in the town pools today that we have seen in 2008 – about twelve between the Judges and Hydro.  Nearly all were nymphing.  Still waiting for the cicadas Paul…  Still loads of trout in most pools.  Fresh run trout easily seen today spawning in new redds just below the flying fox wire at the head of the Island Pool.  They have been "busy" there for three days keeping the tourists amused.  We think they must be northern hemisphere steelheads.

Tramping Report

Photos are Noel Campbell & Martyn Tann from London on the Tongariro Crossing last weekend.

Pip could not resist the photo of the cobweb on top of Tongariro..

While the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is perfectly safe in fine weather, trampers still need to carry warm waterproof clothing just in case there is a southerly shift.  Some TRM guests got caught out and almost froze  recently.  Their day started off fine but deteriorated after they had committed themselves.  Many turned back before the summitt.  If it looks questionable or at all "iffy" TRM usually try to talk prospects into considering other alternatives.  Trampers considering the Tongariro Alpine Crossing should always have a B Plan.  TRM’s specialist mountain guide Pip will elaborate on these tomorrow.

Horticultural Report

We ate our first organically grown blackberries today.  Main crop will not peak until March.  The best spot is above the Stag Pool.
